Elster

The magpie is known for many superstitions, especially in the Western culture the bird faces many negative connotations, like bad omens, ill tidings and witchcraft. And also, often known to steal shiny things. Bling. Bling. Whereas in Eastern cultures, the magpie symbolizes good fortune, good tidings and happiness.

«One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy, five for silver, six for gold, seven for a secret never to be told», this famous rhyme even suggests that the meaning of seeing a magpie depends on the quantity of magpies seen.

This black and white narrative attached to the bird follows me along in my project called Elster, in which I try to break down this understanding in a visual, performative and playful way. Finding out if the magpie can also be between this duality, a sharing, a taking and a giving character in a form of symbiosis, which bring things together in circularity.

My focus being on collecting materials, that I find on the street, in secondhand markets or used materials which are handed down to me by people. The essence of my work Elster lies in those materials, which in my design process I like to deconstruct and give a new purpose in interaction with the human body. Challenging everything that the magpie Elster could be and f inding opportunities in it.
